CUTTING RINGS FROM A TUBE

Co-operating with one or more disc cutters 9 mounted with axial play in radially movable slides 8, means for moving the tube longitudinally within the die and a guide plate 27 carrying pins 37 engaging the die 1 by means of pins 39 and a flange 38 pressing the cutter(s) 9 against the action of spring(s) 10 towards the die 1 to maintain the required cutting clearance. The slides are carried by a cutter head 3 mounted on a shaft 5 rotatable by an hydraulic motor 16 and are moved radially via levers 11 by hydraulic cylinder 14. The tube is slid along the die by pins 22 on a pneumatically driven yoke 23 and is clamped against the die by hydraulically driven pistons acting on a lever 19. The guide plate 27 is connected by links 28 to a shaft 29 which is rotatable by rack and pinion 32, 33 to move the plate away and allow a new workpiece to be inserted. The plate is moved into operative position by an hydraulically driven draw bar 34. The length of the pins 39 is equal to the thickness of the disc cutter(s) and the length of the pins 37 equals the length of the flange 38 plus the cutting clearance.
