The ignition circuit for a gas discharge flash tube includes an ignition voltage generator in parallel to the main flash capacitor. The ignition voltage capacitor (4) is coupled to a separate voltage source (5). A series of diodes (6) prevents the high voltage impulse from the ignition capacitor from discharging over the flash capacitor (3). The ignition capacitor (4) voltage increases until the break-down voltage of the tube is reached. The capacitor discharges to provide heating of the tube and the flash capacitor then discharges. An alternative form utilises a piezoelectric crystal instead of the ignition capacitor.
