<p>The reflection amplifier, for very short electromagnetic waves, has a tunnel diode as negative impedance element connected to one part of a three-port circulator. The two remaining ports are connected one to the input signal and the other to the load. A transformation network is connected between the tunnel diode and the circulator to avoid the drop in gain that occurs when the negative impedance increases due to the diode's receiving a large signal (for large output power). The transformation network consists of a capacitor shunting the diode and an inductor in series with the diode. The capacitance and inductance bear specified relationships to the negative impedance.</p> |
