Release-resisting screw element, e.g. a nut, comprises a Belville washer provided at the inner peripheral edge with radial tongues. When the nut is applied to a screw thread the tongues accommodate themselves elastically to the thread helix and become locked into position without permanent set. The tongues are approximately of square form with a rounding at their free corners, and the locking action is in part due to the tongues being twisted by the helix angle of the thread. A corresponding screw may by formed by providing the tongues at the outer periphery of the washer.
