Radially compressible yarn bobbin has part of its circumference provided with an axially extending castellated segment. Cylindrical or frusto-conical bobbins can be obtd. for fixing and stabilising yarns. Pref. the bobbin is injection moulded from a plastics material and the segment is formed by interdigited prongs which are slidable along the inner surface of the bobbin between two end positions which determine the diametral dimensions of the compressible bobbin. End positions are defined by end stops and the bobbin retains its circular cross-section and uniform axial configuration over its whole length. Shrinkage of yarns can be controlled to the desired value whilst the cross-sectional area of the bobbin remains circular, whereby bobbin may be used directly on subsequent processing machines.
