1485119 Engine starter drives LUCAS ELECTRICAL Ltd 26 Sept 1974 [5 Oct 1973] 46567/73 Heading F1K An engine starter drive includes an axially movable pinion assembly 17, i.e. pinion 22, jamming roller clutch 21, and sleeve 18, helically splined on an electric motor shaft 13, and moved by an electromagnet 25, the electromagnet armature 26 acting on the end of sleeve 18 via a plate 28, which, on return of the pinion assembly to its next position as shown, is trapped between sleeve 18 and a collar 16 carried by the shaft to act as a brake on the rotation of the shaft and pinion assembly. A return spring 29 acts between an abutment on sleeve 18 and a cover flange 30 fast with the motor casing 11. As shown, the armature is concentric with the shaft and rotatable therewith to act as an inertia brake. Again, the armature may be held against rotation. A brass sleeve 27 on the armature, or electromagnetic poles 24, guides the rotatable armature, and provides friction braking. Two or more poles 24 may be provided. Alternatively, the sleeve 18 may be moved axially by a plate (44), Fig. 2 (not shown), acted on by an external solenoid (41) acting via a lever (42). |
