Arc welding with automatic burner alignment - using optical scanner in electronic circuit which adjusts burner position

Gaps being joined by welding are scanned without using contact, to eliminate any displacement of the burner w.r.t. the seam. Any deviation of the arc due to the displacement of the seam is evaluated and employed for automatic adjustment of the burner. One pref. appts. includes a sensor tube fixed on the arc welding burner at an angle w.r.t. the burner axis; the sensor tube contains two or four channels, each fitted with a photodiode and fed with protective gas. The channels can be automatically cleaned with wire brushes or scrapers, and/or fitted with protective glass shields. The photodiode are connected in an electronic circuit used to keep the burner in its correct position; if required, the sensor can be water-cooled. Provides a simple and reliable system ensuring correct burner alignment in arc welding.
