1485032 Gas turbine engine casings; compressor casings ROLLS-ROYCE (1971) Ltd 7 Aug 1975 [23 Aug 1974] 37041/74 Headings F1C and F1T The invention relates to a casing such as the compressor casing of a gas turbine engine which comprises stator vane-carrying portions 14 and rotor blade tip surrounding portions 16, the assembly being surrounded by an outer layer of carbon fibre reinforced composite material 24 which comprises continuous carbon fibres wound therearound and embedded in a resin matrix which bonds the fibres to the wall. The vanecarrying portions 10 are formed of steel in the form of T-section rings which have undercut recesses 15 in which the roots of the stator vanes are received. Spacer rings 16 are disposed between the vane-carrying portions and in the assembly surround the tips of the rotor blades, the rings 16 engaging against the arms 12 of the T-section rings; the spacer rings are formed from lightweight carbon fibre reinforced plastic material. The parts are assembled on a mandrel and a continuous filament of carbon fibre wound over the assembly, resin being applied at the same time, the resin being subsequently cured. Fillets 26 are disposed in the corners before the carbon fibre is applied. The stator vanes are entered in a single cut-out in each ring, the final vane being secured by means of bolts; a bladed rotor disc is added after each stator vane row is completed. In Fig. 3 the inner wall 30 of the stator casing is formed as a single drum of metal or glass fibre reinforced composite material to define stator vane-receiving recesses 32 and rotor blade surrounding portions 34; the drum is formed at its outer surface with recesses 40 around the portions 34, these recesses being filled with a material such as honeycomb material 45 so as to form a smooth surface on which the carbon fibre 41 is wound. The stator vanes 38 are formed at the circumferential faces of their roots with flanges 52 which flanges engage recesses 50 in retaining plates 46, the plates 46 being secured to the casing by bolts 48. |
