1484814 Chucks HARDINGE BROS Inc 17 Jan 1975 [10 Oct 1974] 2200/75 Heading B3B A collet assembly comprises a body member 12 having a cylindrical rear portion and a plurality of resilient fingers extending axially therefrom, a rib 42 at the distal end of each of said fingers, work gripping pads 14 mounted one on each of said fingers and having a groove for engaging said rib 42 wherein the pads 14 have exterior surfaces which collectively form a frusto-conical cam surface co-operable with a cam surface 70 of an actuator sleeve 16, an internal work gripping surface 55, and are mounted to rock slightly on the rib 42 when the collet is opened or closed. A pad is engaged with a finger by means of a pin 62 which is received in a radial slot 44 in the end of the finger to allow the rocking movement. The collet assembly is mounted within the actuator sleeve 16 and assembled, e.g. in a lathe spindle 18. The sleeve 16 is moved by actuator 20, 28. The body member 12 is made so that in its relaxed-state the fingers are splayed apart and the pads are assembled thereon and restrained inwardly by a resilient ring member. An adjustable end stop 64 is screwed to the cylindrical rear portion of the body member 12 and the workpiece engaging part 65 can be of a diameter the same as the workpiece W and be gripped by the rear part of the collet gripping surfaces 55 while a short workpiece W is gripped by the front part of the gripping surfaces 55 to prevent the pads from rocking out of engagement from the cam surface 70. |
