<p>1515649 Seals ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 28 Feb 1977 [1 March 1976] 08312/77 Heading F2B A polyethylene filler plug for both filling and retaining polyurethane foam insulating material within the hollow cavity 15 between double-wall 11, 14 appliances such as insulated refrigerators, comprises a hexagonal plug having six triangular petal-like flaps 23-28 conically arranged and through which an insulation material filler nozzle 21 may be inserted for the introduction of the foam insulating material within the cavity 15, the conical array of flaps 23-28 opening to readily permit introduction of the nozzle, but on completion of filling the cavity 15 with foam, and subsequent removal of the nozzle, the petal flaps 23-28 close, i.e. return to their abutting conical array to inhibit outward flow of the insulating foam through the filler plug. Initially, the conical form of the petal flaps 23-28 is directed outwardly and the flaps 23-28 are interconnected by frangible webs 31 which taper from a thin centre region 32 to a thicker outer region 34 for controlled rupture of the webs 31 and subsequent inversion of the petal flaps as the filler nozzle 21 is introduced therethrough. In Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown) abutment stops (82, 81) are arranged on the plug body (51) and the adjacent petal flaps 23-28 to prevent the petals 23-28 from springing fully opened outwardly past a predetermined position in the unlikely event that an outward flow of foam material forces the petal flaps 23-28 from their inverted core inwardly-pointed position back to and through or past their original outwardly-pointed position. Reinforcing ribs 36, 37 &c. are provided along the petal flap edges and are bevelled to provide mutual planar free support when inwardly conically arranged in their sealing position.</p> |
