A process for obtaining max. thermal efficiency in continuous melting and superheating, of iron in an electric furnace with separate outlets for removal of molten metal and slag, where the slag is maintained at a greater thickness than the length of the arc between the electrodes and the bath, thus masking part of the arc; the bath is kept in a decarburising state so a foamed slag is obtd.; and raw material is continuously introduced to intercept the radiation omitted by the upper part of the arc. The basic slag index should be 2 min. and the decarburising state controlled by adding C and O2 to the furnace which should be fitted with a mobile roof, three electrodes, and measuring equipment for temp., heat flow to walls, electrode position, electrical parameters, and gas-analysis. The furnace arrangement gives max. exploitation of electric power combined with max. refractory life.
|
