Aromatic polynitriles are produced by the ammoxidation of polyalkyl aromatic hydrocarbons, the reactants being continuously contacted with a fluidized solid catalyst with a conversion per pass of hydrocarbon of 20-80%, and unreacted hydrocarbon and mononitrile found during a previous reaction being recycled. The process may be used to convert para-xylene to terephthalonitrile, meta-xylene to isophthalonitrile, para-diethylbenzene to terephthalonitrile and mesitylene to the corresponding trinitrile.</p> |
