A shock-absorber assembly for a vacuumjacketed vessel comprises a cap member 57 adapted to engage the vacuum bottle 23, 25 and surround the tip 26 thereof, a base member 49 located in a depression in the base 13 of the vessel, members 57, 49 being slidable one within the other, and a spring 97 which biases member 57 upwardly. As shown, member 57 slides within member 49 and is provided with shoulders 77, 78 which limit upward and downward movement thereof by engagement with inwardly directed flanges 69, 71 on member 49. Spring 97 tapers towards each of its ends which are supported on end walls of member 49 (Figs. 2 and 4, not shown). When the vessel is assembled shoulders 77, 78 are spaced from flanges 69, 71 to permit movement of the bottle 23, 24 in either direction and the latter is urged into engagement with a resilient packing around the neck of the vessel (Fig. 1, not shown). In a modification (not shown) the base member 49 is disposed within member 57 and is engaged by the mid-portion of the spring which is supported at its ends by member 57.
