Process for the arylalkylation of phenols

Phenols are aralkylated by heating with an aralkene in presence of 0.2-4 wt. per cent of catalyst consisting solely of oxalic acid dihydrate, and distilling off unused starting materials and the reaction products. Examples describe the reaction of phenol with styrene or alphamethylstyrene, and the reaction of resorcinol with styrene.
