The base plate (10) is a one piece construction of tough latticed polyurethane with an abutment (12) to fix the base plate to the chain links. The abutment has recesses (16) to accommodate the bolt heads. The bolts pass through borings (14) to screw into the chain links. Inserts (18, 20) are provided each side of the abutment (12). The inserts run upwards and outwards at a tangent from the abutment to increase the turning ability. Hollow chambers (26) are provided at the leading and trailing base plate edges. Two further hollow chambers (22, 24) separated longitudinally by a step (30) from each other and from their respective adjoining chambers (26) by a cross step (28) are also provided.
