1484259 Blind riveting; chucks; drilling TUCKER FASTENERS Ltd 9 Dec 1974 [8 Dec 1973] 56986/73 Headings B3U B3B and B3C A tool for setting self drilling blind rivet assemblies comprises a sleeve 22 rotatably mounted in and projecting forwardly from a housing 10 to provide an abutment for the rivet head and mandrel engaging means mounted in the sleeve 22 for rotation therewith to enable the rivet assembly to drill a hole in the workpiece and for axial reciprocation relative thereto to enable the rivet to be set. In one embodiment, the tool is operated by rearwardly pulling a sleeve 35 surrounding the sleeve 22 to cause ball catches 44 to be pressed by a spring urged sleeve 48 into a groove 42 in the sleeve 35 which allows a split jaw collet 50 to enter a recess 31 in a nosepiece 29 and to confine a portion of the mandrel stem having flattened regions (F), (Fig 9, not shown). When a valve 88, Fig. 1, is opened by a trigger 108, an air motor 12 is operated causing the sleeve 22 to rotate which in turn rotates the mandrel so that a hole may be drilled in a workpiece. A valve 98 is then operated by the trigger 108 to raise a pneumatic piston 114 which rearwardly moves an hydraulic piston 122 attached to a drawbar 126. As a result, a screw (132), (Fig. 2, not shown) connected to the drawbar 126 engages a shoulder (76) of a jaw case 64 and pulls the latter rearwardly causing jaws 74 to grip and pull the mandrel stem so that the rivet is set. During the rearward movement, the collet 50 is pulled out of the nosepiece 29 by the jaw case 64 taking the sleeve 48 with it. A rearward flow of air through the tool may be provided to assist removal of the broken mandrel stem. In other embodiments, the two jaw sets 50, 74 are replaced by a single jaw set carried by the jaw case, which jaw set may be formed by two jaws (328) (Fig. 8, not shown) or by a split collet (224) (Fig. 7, not shown) provided with splines (226) to allow rotation with, and sliding relative to, the jaw case (212). In one of the alternative embodiments (Fig. 7) a spring loaded latch (210) is provided in the nosepiece to prevent forward ejection of the broken mandrel stem and in the other embodiment (Fig. 8) a jaw separating member (314, 316) is provided. |
