The typewriter has a spherical type head mounted on a carriage connected to a belt and roller system which transmits letter selection and letter shift movements to the head. The system has a roller which is moved to rotate the head for letter selection and another roller which is moved for letter shift. The shift roller is mounted on a rocker connected by a tension band (5) to a shift mechanism where keyboard-operated pivotal arms (7, 10) are interposed into the path of continually reciprocating drive members (1, 2) acting on a summing lever (3) connected to the tension band.
