A method of purifying water to remove dissolved iron comprises precipitating the iron by means of O2 and passing the water through a vessel contg. filter material. The passing of the water through the vessel is stopped from time to time and during these temporary shutdown periods, O2 contg. water is passed through a portion of the vessel. A considerable redn. in the treatment cost is obtd. The iron-removing process is completely controlled. By introducing O2-contg. water through only part of the vessel, a boundary surface is produced in the filtering material; on one side of this the material is reducing w.r.t. iron while on the other side it is oxidising. The result is that iron bacteria dwell at the boundary surface cuasing a very rapid pptn. of iron in this region. The thickness of the boundary surface is only a few centimetres, but when the water passes through it, the iron is almost instaneously pptd.
|
