1536873 Racquets DUNLOP Ltd 3 Sept 1976 [18 Sept 1975] 38342/75 Heading A6D [Also in Division B5] In making a frame for a sports racquet one or more braided fibrous tubes 2, 3 are built up around a tube 1 of thermoplastics material, the braided fibrous tubes being impregnated with a thermosetting resin, the tube/fibre assembly is shaped to the required shape and the resin is cured. The assembly may be formed by compression moulding during which it is deformed to alter its transverse cross-section using a mould with upper and lower portions 10 and 11 provided with cavities 12 and 13 of the desired shape of the racquet. The crosssectional shape may be elliptical with the major axis parallel to or perpendicular to the stringing plane of the racquet. The cross-sectional shape need not be uniform, for example, the wall thickness may be increased in the region of the throat of the racquet. The mould may be maintained at an elevated temperature to cure the resin. The braided tubes may be of carbon fibres or aromatic polyamide fibres. The thermoplastics material of the tube 1 may be a polyamide such as polyethylene, polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride. The thermosetting resin may include epoxy, polyester and phenolic resins. |
