摘要 1413303 Production of hydroxy and carboxyl group-containing polymers SHELL INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 23 March 1973 [25 April 1972] 19212/72 Heading C3P A polymer containing both hydroxyl and carboxyl groups is produced by polymerizing a mixture of (a) one or more vinyl esters of saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids whose COOH group is attached to a primary or secondary carbon atom; (b) one or more esters as above, but in which the COOH group of the acid is attached to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom, and (c) one or more alpha-, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, in an organic solvent having as sole major constituent a monohydric primary or secondary C 1-5 alcohol in the presence of an initiator, the molar ratios of (a), (b) and (c) being 2À1 to 6 : 1 : 0À2 to 1À2 respectively, followed by heating the polymer produced, in the same solvent with an acidic transesterification catalyst. Examples of solvents are methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, sec-butanol and isobutanol. In the examples, copolymers of vinyl acetate, a mixture of vinyl esters of an alpha branched aliphatic carboxylic acid having an average of 10 carbon atoms, and acrylic or methacrylic acid, are copolymerized and transesterified using methane sulphonic acid as the catalyst. The resultant dispension is compounded with TiO 2 and a melamine formaldehyde resin as cross-linker, and coated on to steel panels.
