A process for the optical resolution of glutamic acid, a glutamic acid hydrohalide or a glutamate salt comprises continuously circulating a supersaturated solution of the racemic substance into one or more resolution tanks, each of which is equipped with an inlet and an overflow device for the solution and a suspending device for crystals, separately suspending seed crystals of each of the optical isomers of said substance in the tank or tanks by stirring, keeping the two different isomers of seed crystals from intermixing, withdrawing the overflow solution from the tank through a means for preventing the overflow of seed and grown crystals and separating the grown seed crystals. Single tanks divided by a plate which passes only solution, series and parallel connected tanks and coated seeds may be used; withdrawing grown crystals and feeding the tank may be continuous.
