The blast furnace gas pressure control can be switched over in case of necessity partly or fully from the conventional gate valve to a gas turbine which lies in a shunt circuit to the latter. A pressure setting device supplies a high setting and a slightly lower setting. The load setter can be used to vary the load on the turbine. The switch from one type of control to the other is effected automatically by the load setter as a function of the changing turbine load. This avoids the throttling losses caused by using only a gate valve for the pressure control. The new system can absorb irregular and sudden fluctuations in the rate of blast furnace gas produced.
