A discharge valve on a pressure vessel (1) for compressed air has a valve spindle (12) which is operated by a membrane (7). The valve spindle (12) which is hollow, penetrates the pressure chamber and is normally sealed off by a floating plug (16). When water collects at the bottom of the pressure vessel, the float is lifted and thus allows compressed air to reach the valve chamber (9). The pressurized membrane now moves the valve spindle upwards so that the seal ring (18) frees the discharge channel (11). When all the water has drained off, the discharge channel is closed again and the hollow valve spindle is covered up by the floating plug (16).
