Solar collector comprises, between the collector base and an insulating panel, an air shaft which is open at the top and bottom. The air shaft may be covered airtightly with two covers, or only its top end may be provided with a cover while its bottom end remains open. A thermostat which is connected to the covers may be thermally coupled to the upper collector output. The appts. is mechanical and independent of a voltage source, and at a given temp. eliminates heat insulation at the rear collector base wall to allow free convection of air with extraction of heat from the collector base.
