The axle housings of the heavy vehicles are made from flat metal stampings which are rolled to a variable wall thickness and bent into the half shells of the housing prior to welding. In order to provide uniform welding seams the edges of the stampings or pressins are bent at different angles so that after rolling to different thickness and bending to shape, a uniform angled v groove is set between the mating flanges. The process provides a simple mass production technique in which a little preparation of the edges prior to rolling enables a simple one process weld to be used to join the half shells.
|
