The relay is operated by a magnet ring having a pole count compatible with the number of engine cylinders. The relay closes the circuit to the first transistor in an electronic ignition system and thus controls the current flow in the ignition coil primary winding. The relay, typically a reed relay filled with an inert gas, takes the place of the conventional contact breaker points, and the magnet ring replaces the multilobed cam driving the contact breaker arm controlling the opening of the points. The reliability and performance of the ignition system are improved as wear and contamination are eliminated and mechanical inertia greatly reduced.
|
