The mechanism converts reciprocating motion into rotary motion in the same direction, having a screwed spindle with two threaded sections of opposite pitch, working in nuts each acting via a ratchet mechanism on a gear ring. The two nuts transmit movement to the ring both on the forward and the return stroke of the spindle. The ratchets lock one nut into engagement with the latter on the forward stroke, while allowing the other to freewheel on it. Where it is desired to convert strong thrust forces into rotary movement, a number of spindles can be used, with the nuts forming part of planetary pinions on a common thrust stirrup.
