<p>New bis-pyridinium cpds. are cpds. of formula (I), (where R is 1-16C alkyl; R1=H, lower alkyl or halogen; and X- is one equivalent of an anion). (I) are antimicrobials with good activity against fungi and bacteria, esp. gram-negative organisms. Toxicity to wards warm-blooded animals is very low, and skin tolerance is good, so that (I) are partic. useful for antimicrobial ointments, powders, tinctures and similar preparations. Specific cpds. (I) include 4,4'-(1,4-phenylenediamino) bis-(1-nonylpyridinium bromide). In an example, prepn. is by heating p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride, N-(4-pyridyl)-pyridinium chloride hydrochloride and 2N HCl 2 hrs. at 180-200 degrees C to give N,N1-bis(4-pyridyl)phenylene-diamine, adn quaternising with 1-bromo-n-nonane.</p> |
