Aldehydes prodn. from alpha-olefin epoxides - by isomerisation with graphite catalyst in presence of a diluent, e.g. nitrogen and oxygen

Prepn. comprises catalytic isomerisation of corresp. epoxides of alpha-olefins in the vapour phase by contacting a gaseous mixt. of epoxide and a diluent at 150-500 degrees C with a catalyst comprising, all or partly, graphite of specific surface 1-20 m2/g. The catalyst is pref. graphite having deposited on it >=50 wt. % of a catalytic cpd., esp. CrO3-WO3. The gaseous mixt. pref. contains =50 vol. % of epoxides and may also contain O2. Method is esp. for prodn. of propanol and phenyl-acetaldehyde. The first is an intermediate in prodn. of propylamines and propionic acid, the second is used in the pharmaceutical industry and in perfume prodn. The catalyst has good thermal conductivity and high selectivity.
