The optical system enables one to obtain a scale display, consisting of luminous strips arranged side by side along a line. The optical system has light channel (3) above a corresponding number of light sources (1). Each light channel has four lateral faces, two first faces (4, 5) each making an angle with the perpendicular to the plan of the light sources, less than the complement of the total reflection limit angle. The distance between these two first faces is constant, or diminishes slightly. The two lateral faces are inclined towards each other in a symmetrical fashion with respect to the axis of the channel. This diminishes the distance between the faces when light passes from the channel input to its output.
