<p>Gas turbine has lengthwise or transverse combustion chambers inside a rotary hub. In these a mixture of fuel and air from a compressor, likewise inside the hub but running at higher speed, is burnt, and the hot exhaust gases are discharged radially through hollow propeller blades. The resulting reaction forces causes blades and hub to rotate. Instead of propeller blades there can be adjustable hollow rotor blades on the hub, so that the turbine can be used for driving helicopters. The blades can also form the turbo-fan stage of an aircraft jet engine.</p> |
