In a power-driven typewriter with universal type head the control signals for character selection and for case shifts are produced by keys acting on code rails through release levers and intermediate levers. For case shift and return, a single intermediate lever is operatively connected to the coding bars. The lever is settable by respective shift keys acting through two shift pawls, two setting pawls and a control pawl. For safe discrimination between shift and return movements, an additional control signal is derived from one of the setting pawls acting through a tie rod and Bowden cable.
