PURPOSE:To permit extension of the retention period of the process material and also adjustment of the thickness of the process material layer in the above-identified apparatus, in which automobile scrap or the like is heated from above as it is being transferred by an oxcillable conveyor to thereby remove combustible matter by burning, by providing a buffle means at the bottom of a transfer trough and also providing a vertically movable barrage member at the outlet.
