The manually operated activating device for a roller shutter, which can be wound up on a spindle, involves a double pull cord and a rotatably mounted drive roller coupled to the spindle, with a cord running track, and a cord winding roller on a rotary mounting with a spring drum. The rotary mounting for the roller shutter spindle is directly contained by the drive roller (12), while the spring drum (18) and drive roller are indirectly rotatably mounted on a commonly shared retainer. This may be a flat extended unit, indirectly attachable to the shutter box or soffit walling, and may be in the form of a plate (15) with two bearing bolts (13, 17) projecting at right angles, for the drive roller or spring drum.
