A bimetallic catalyst is produced by contacting silver, either as a powder of surface area 0.01-100 m2/g or on a refractory metal oxide support, with an aqueous solution of a salt of gold, iridium or platinum. In a preferred embodiment a solution of chloro auric acid contains 1 x 10-5 to 1 x 10-3 g. of gold per 1 m2 of available silver surface. As the catalyst is formed only on the surface of the silver the image of the expensive second metal is minimised. Furthermore the process provided control of surface composition and thus of catalytic activity. |
