A two-component diazotype material comprises a support coated with two or three layers, one layer containing a benzene diazonium com - pound with a tertiary amino group in the P-position to the diazonium group and an acide reacting compound, one of the other layers containing a hydrophobic film-forming binder and non-coupling benzimidazole of formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, aralkyl which may be substituted in the alkyl group by hydroxy, an aryl group which may be substituted, an alkyl group substituted by one or more hydroxy groups, aminoalkyl, haloalkyl cyanoalkyl, carbonyl, alkylcarbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl, or amidocarbonyl, R 2 is hydroxyalkylene, R 3 - R 8 are hydrogen,halogen, alkyl, alkoxy or a nitro group, and a heatsensitive compound which neutralises the acid-reacting compound on heating, and are of the layers containing a 2, 3-di-hydroxynaphthalene or its 6- sulphonic acid as a coupler and zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide,a zinc salt a zinc/nitrogen-containing organic compound complex specified acid-reacting compounds are carboxylic acids, benzene sulphonic acid and hydrochloric acid whilst acid-neutralising compounds are amines especially N-acyl- N<SP>1</SP> -hydroxy-alkyl alkylenediamines, an amine/bisphenol A addition product, a bisamide of oxalic acid and urea. The material may be imagewise exposed to light or heat and developed or fixed by overall exposure to heat or light respectively. If a three-layer material is used, the diazonism salt and the benzimidazole are preferably the top and bottom layers and the intermediate layer may contain the heat sensitive compound. Alternatively an intermediate layer may be formed by coating a polyvinyl acetate layer with a diazomium compound, treating the layer with ethanol which dissolves the diazo compound on the surface and swells the polyvinylacetate to leave intermediate layer which is overcoated with a benzimidazole-containing layer |
