Breakage guard for high pressure vessel - has surrounding burst container of reinforced concrete peripherally joined by tension members

The safety device serves to protect the surrounding area in the event of breakage of a reactor pressure vessel. It consists of a surrounding burst-container of reinforced concrete with a peripheral joint gap dividing it into top (1) and bottom parts (2), these being locked together by expansible axial tension members (4). When the unit is assembled there is only a small gap between the pressure vessel (3), seated on the bottom part (2) of the burst container. In the operative state, the pressure vessel is supported against the burst container at least in the axial direction. The joint gap (5) may be divided into a radially aligned inner joint, adjoining axial joint, and outer joint adjoining this. The outer joint may have a greater cross-sectional area than the axial joint.
