A hammer drill with motor powered drive piston and air operated striker in a cylinder has a control port issuing into a surrounding chamber sealed from outside and from the inside of the hammer. The position of the cylinder in the hammer drill housing is determined by a shoulder (27) round the outside wall of the cylinder and fitted with air ports (32). The cylinder (22) is positively inserted in a socket in the hammer housing so as not to twist round. The ports in the shoulder (27) are axially directed, and the shoulder itself runs concentric to the main cylinder axis and is thus limited either side by the respective part (28) of the hammer drill housing. The cylinder is held in the hammer housing socket by inside ribs.
