1483187 Measuring flatness of anodes electrically IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Sept 1974 [22 Oct 1973] 49008/73 Heading G1N [ Also in Division C7 ] The flatness of an anode is assessed by bringing it into contact with a sheet of dielectric material on a rigid plane sheet of an electrically conductive material and measuring the capacitance of the capacitor so formed. The anode including working surface 5 to be tested, bridge piece 6 and hollow tube 7, is supported by a gyrofork 22 clamping the current lead-in rod 24 and connected to one end of a counterbalance arm 16 pivoted on a gyro-pivot 15. A weight 23 is movable along the arm 16 to counterbalance the weight of the current lead-in rod 24. The clamped anode is then lowered into contact with a dielectric sheet 4 on a cast iron member 1 and the height. of the pivot 15 adjusted by screw member 14 until the counterbalance arm 16 is horizontal. A capacitance bridge 8 and indicator 9 is connected at 10 and 11 to the plate 1 and current lead-in 24 via the pivot and arm 15, 16 and the apparatus calibrated by measuring the capacitance using a range of anodes of varying flatness to obtain a reference value corresponding to the desired flatness. Meter 9 is then adjusted to give a zero reading after which the anodes to be tested are inserted in the apparatus. Positive readings on the meter, greater capacitance than the reference, indicate a satisfactory flatness whereas negative readings indicate an unsatisfactory anode. |
