1483074 Epoxidation catalysts SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 23 Sept 1974 [24 Sept 1973] 41308/74 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Supported silver catalysts are prepared by coating the surface of a support with an overlayer of polyacrylonitrile complexed with a silver salt and heating the coated support at up to 600‹C to pyrolyze the polyacrylonitrile and convert the silver ions of the complexed silver salt into discrete particles of silver. The support may be coated either with acrylonitrile which is polymerised in situ and the resultant polymer coating then complexed with the silver salt applied in solution in a polar organic solvent or with a preformed polyacrylonitrile silver salt complex. The catalyst can be activated and residual carbonaceous material removed by further heating in an O 2 -containing gas which may also contain ethylene.
