1482918 Sleeve connectors RAYCHEM Ltd 9 Sept 1974 [10 Sept 1973] 42483/73 Heading H2E An assembly for protecting and shielding a junction between two coaxial cables 1, 1<SP>1</SP> comprises an outer shrinkable (preferably heatshrinkable, e.g. polyethylene of polyvinylidene fluoride) sleeve 10 and a corrugated sheath 9, each corrugation extending from one end of the sheath to the other, the sheath 9 being compressed on to the cable junction when the latter is shrunk (Fig. 2, not shown). A mastic or hot-melt adhesive sealant 12 may be provided inside the ends of the sleeve 10 to form a waterproof and gasproof joint, and rings of solder 11 may be provided to solder the ends of the sheath 9 to the metal sheath 4 of the cables. The corrugations of the sheath 9 may be parallel to or at an angle to the axis, or may be zig-zag or curved, or the sheath may comprise both longitudinal and transverse corrugations. A second shrinkable sleeve 8 may be disposed inside the sheath 9, as shown. The sheath 9 may be made of copper or any other soft metal having a high electrical and thermal conductivity, e.g. aluminium, gold, tin, silver or platinum, metal foil being particularly suitable.
