<p>1437447 Regulating I C engines TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 10 Sept 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 42517/73 Heading F1B I.C. engine control apparatus comprises first control means 4, Fig. 1 including injection means 1 for a pilot fuel spray which is ignited in a combustion chamber adjacent the injection means, means providing a variable mixture in the combustion chamber with a second control means 8 Fig. 1 including a fuel nozzle 7, a first pivoted triple linkage actuating an electrical switch means 23, 20 a second triple linkage comprising an arm 13 and a pair of slotted links pinned thereto one link 17 being pivoted to the control lever 14 of the first triple linkage and the other link being responsive to the electrical switch means. The mixture charge is supplied via intake tube 6, Fig. 1, the fuel flow from source 3 to nozzle 7 via control 8 being varied proportional to load up to the quantity required for an unthrottled charge with a F/A ratio (by weight) of 0.08. Nozzle 1, Fig. 2 (not shown) is supplied from source 3 and pump and control unit 3, the pilot charge being ignited by spark-plug 2. Above 0À055 F/A ratio pilot injection may be terminated since the premixed charge can be ignited directly. If the engine is operated at an output below that corresponding to an unthrottled premixed charge mixture strength i.e. leaner than 0À015 F/A ratio the fuel and/or air supply is controlled by terminating fuel delivery from nozzle 7 and operating on an increased pilot injection from nozzle 1 which is gradually reduced as engine output is reduced. Alternatively pilot fuel injection is maintained and a further progressive reduction of premixed charge fuel is made with simultaneous air intake throttling to maintain the premixed charge F/A ratio about 0À015. These operating modes are obtained by a linkage between control units 4, 8 and an air throttle 9, Fig. 6.
