In a device such as a compressor or hot-gas reciprocating engine comprising a piston 2 reciprocable in a cylinder 4 to vary the volume of a working space 5 and in which the piston is sealed with respect to the cylinder by a rolling diaphragm 4 supported by liquid in a space 6, means are provided for removing and receiving gas which diffuses into the liquid from the working space. The liquid is supplied to the space 6 by a pump 29 in a sump 48 and is withdrawn and recirculated thereto by a pump 44. A compartment 16 having a gas permeable partition 18 of e.g. palladium is disposed in a duct 15 between the space 6 and the pump 44 whereby gas e.g. hydrogen entrained in the liquid diffuses through the partition 18 and is withdrawn through a duct 31 which may be connected through a check valve with the working space 5. A heating element 32 in the compartment 16 increases the rate of diffusion. In order to maintain a constant pressure differential between the spaces 5, 6 an automatic control device 21 is provided. The control device comprises a diaphragm 25 responsive to the average pressure in the spaces 5 and 6 through respective narrow ducts 45, 46. When the pressure in the space 6 becomes higher than required, the diaphragm opens a needle valve 26 to permit liquid being returned to the space 6 by the pump 44 to the by-passed back to the sump 48. The sump pump 29 may be eliminated, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), by directing gas contaminated liquid from the space 6 through the control device 21 to a container, wherein gas bubbles are separated by passage of the liquid through a wire gauze prior to being pumped back to the space 6. In another construction, Fig. 1 (not shown), the space 6 is defined by a gas permeable member 8 enclosed by an annular compartment 10 connected through a non-return valve 14 with the working space 5. The member may be of palladium or of the same material as the rolling diaphragm e.g. polyurethane rubber. |
