<p>1472236 Vehicle suspension G M S BERGER 25 Feb 1975 [26 Feb 1974] 7848/75 Heading B7D [Also in Division B8] In a trailer vehicle having a chassis 5 supported on an axle 7 by leaf springs 6 which can be compressed by a spring compression device for lowering the chassis to allow it to be inserted beneath a shipping container supported by legs provided thereon, the spring compression device is also arranged to engage the ground as the springs are compressed so that the chassis is positioned at a predetermined height above the ground regardless of the weight of the load carried. Chains 2 connected to the axle 7 by clamps 3 pass over rollers 4 on the chassis 5 and are connected to a rod 12 extending between the pistons 1 of a pair of hydraulic jacks 9 mounted on the chassis. When fluid is pumped into the jacks 9 to extend the pistons 1 the chains 2 are tensioned to compress the springs 6 and plates at the lower end of the pistons 1 simultaneously engage the ground to position the chassis 5 at a predetermined height. After securing the springs 6 in the compressed state by means of a locking device the pistons 1 are retracted to lower the chassis 5 so that the trailer can be driven beneath the container. A second extension of the jacks 9 raises the chassis 5 to lift the container so that the legs can be removed, whereupon the locking device is released and the pistons 1 retracted so that the springs 6 support the loaded chassis for normal operation. In another embodiment the chains through which the jacks act on the axle are replaced by levers pivotally mounted on the chassis. In a third embodiment the jacks are mounted on the axle, and cables are connected between the pistons of the jacks and the spring mountings on the chassis.</p> |
