[Also in Group XXXI] In a controller for a fluid - pressure - operated device, e.g. a vehicle steering-gear 19, Fig. 1, actuated by piston 14, turning of wheel 37 rotates a primary sleeve valve 31, Figs. 3, 5, against leaf - springs 45, valve 31 having a lost motion connection with a rotary follow-up sleeve valve 32, Figs. 3, 6, sliding around valve 31 via a pin 42 carried by valve 32. Valve 32 is connected by eccentrically moving link 72 embracing pin 42 at one end and having a splined ball-joint 73 at the other end, with a toothed rotor 67, Figs. 3, 7, movable by fluid pressure in an epicycle within a toothed casing 24 and forming expanding or contracting chambers 70 therewith. Pump P supplies pressure fluid to an inlet 3 of controller casing 2 which has an exhaust 8 and two motor ports 10, 11 to the piston 14. On rotation of valve 31 from a neutral position, in which fluid is locked in cylinder 14 and in the epicyclic device 24 and is circulated by pump P through passages in the valve sleeves, pressure fluid from pump P passes through inlet 3, passages 62, Fig. 6, channel 49, recesses 51, Figs. 3, 5, passages 63, Fig. 6, and passages 71, Fig. 3, to expand certain chambers 70 of the epicyclic device. Other chambers 70 contract and fluid is forced through other passages 71, 63 to grooves 54, Fig. 5, passages 65, Fig. 6, and port 11 to actuate piston 14. While fluid from the exhaust side of the piston returns through port 10, passages 58, 64, Figs. 3, 6, passages 55, Fig. 5, passages 33, 52, Fig. 3, and 66, Fig. 6, to exhaust 8. As fluid flows into one side of the piston, an equal amount of fluid flows through the epicyclic device and the rotor recentres the follow-up sleeve with the primary sleeve valve. Should pump P fail, rotation of hand wheel 37 takes up the lost motion at pin 42 and through the sleeves 31, 32 and link 72, turns the rotor 67 so that the epicyclic device acts as a hand pump for moving piston ]4.
