A device for clarifying relatively large quantities of water contaminated with finely dispersed particles of solid matter, comprises a thin-walled cylindrical sieve with perforations diverging outwards to a dia. of is not >0.1 mm, and slightly tapering end fittings; a fixed horizontal tube on which the sieve is free to rotate and through which water is fed into the sieve via a lateral lengthways slot extending one third to one half of the total length of the sieve; a spiral transport wire fixed against the inner surface of the sieve; and a driving mechanism rotating the sieve on the feed tube so that the solid matter is conveyed to the end opposite the water inlet. The sieve has a thickness equal to the dia. of the perforations and the transport wire has a dia. 2% of that of the sieve dia. The device may be used for removing fibres in textile processing or paper- and board-making. It works continuously and is self-cleaning.
