Co-dimers of cyclopentadiene and butadiene are made by (1) heating equimolecular amounts of the dienes in an autoclave at 145 DEG C. under a pressure of 60 atmospheres for 3 hours, or (2) heating one mole of cyclopentadiene with 2 moles of butadiene at 225 DEG C. and 60 atmospheres for 4 hours. In the case of (1) a product is obtained which contains 4-vinyl-cyclohexene - 1, 2 - vinylbicyclo - [2,2,1]-heptene - 2, 4,7,8,9 - tetrahydroindene, and dicyclopentadiene. In the case of (2) a product is obtained which contains 4-vinylcyclohexene - 1, 4,7,8,9 - tetrahydroindene, and dicyclopentadiene.ALSO:Copolymers of ethylene and/or an alphaolefin and at least two monomers belonging to two or more of the following classes, namely alkenylcycloalkenes, omega-alkenyl polycycloalkenes, polycyclic polyenes with condensed nuclei in which the pairs of condensed nuclei have two carbon atoms in common, and diolefins containing an endomethylenic bridge, are made by copolymerizing a mixture of the monomers in the liquid phase in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the reaction product of a vanadium compound and an organometallic aluminium compound or aluminium hydride. The two monomers of the stated classes are preferably contained in a mixture obtained by the co-dimerization of cyclopentadiene and butadiene, and are preferably 4 - vinylcyclohexene - 1, 2 - vinyl - bicyclo-[2,2,1] - heptene - 1, 4,7,8,9 - tetrahydroindene and/or dicyclopentadiene. The copolymerization and/or the preparation of the catalyst, is generally effected in an inert diluent or solvent and at a temperature between 0 DEG and - 80 DEG C. In the examples, the preparation of the following copolymers are described, a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, 4,7,8,9-tetra - hydroindene, and 2 - vinyl - bicyclo-[2,2,1] - heptene - 5, a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, 2 - vinyl - bicyclo - [2,2,1] - heptene-5, and dicyclopentadiene, a copolymer of ethylene, propylene, dicyclopentadiene, and 4,7,8,9-tetrahydroindene, and a copolymer of ethylene, butene-1, dicyclopentadiene, and 4,7,8,9-tetrahydroindene. The copolymers may be vulcanized with conventional mixes such as sulphur, zinc oxide, phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, tetramethylthiouram disulphide, and mercaptobenzothiazole. |
