The water in the swimming pool is sucked up into a drainage compartment (4) which is connected to the pool by an opening (5) at a flow rate (Q') lower than the filling rate (Q) of the pool. Surplus water from the pool is made to overflow into the drainage comparment (4). The drainage compartment (4) consists of a cylindrical shaft next to the side (6) of the pool (1) and connected to the pool by means of a duct (7) opening (5) of which opens into the bottom (8) of the pool (1). A suction tube (9) connected to a pump leads into the drainage compartment (4). The suction head (10) of the tube (9) is positioned at the bottom (11) of the compartment (4).
