A horizontal continuous casting plant is described where molten metal is in a furnace provided near its base with a side outlet hole leading to a horizontal mould, which is pref. made of graphite inserts surrounded by a cooler through which a cooling medium flows. The novelty is that the outlet hole or nozzle is provided on the furnace side with a layer of heat insulation or heat reflecting material, which is least partly covers the hole or nozzle. Layer is pref. fitted on the mould inlet end of the graphite inserts forming the mould, and esp. in or on a ceramic nozzle brick. For casting rectangular sections, layer may be assembled from segments, and several different designs are claimed. The plant is used for casting steel or nonferrous metals, using periodic extn. Prevents or retards direct heat flow from the furnace via the graphite inserts to the cooler. This type of heat flow reduces the heat removed from the metal in the mould, and, when eliminated, higher casting speeds can be used.
|
