<p>The airbag protection in the vehicle is inflated by vaporising a fluid charge (12) using a pyrolytic detonator (25) fired electrically. In order to eliminate the lag in vaporising, due to the fluid being heated to the vaporising temperature, a preheater holds the fluid at the selected temperature when the engine is running. The heater element can be a jacket (21) linked to the ignition switch or can be a double skinned wall heated by tapping off some of the exhaust gases. The use of vaporising fluid also reduces ear damage as the gasification process is more even than a simple pyrolytic gas charge.</p> |
